At Mats Sharpening Services, precision and craftsmanship have always been at the heart of everything we do. While sharpening remains our core focus, I recently had the opportunity to take my passion for blades a step further—by learning to make one from scratch.
Under the expert guidance of Randy from Border Blades, a respected Australian Knife Makers Guild member, I spent an incredible weekend immersed in the traditional skills of knife making. Randy’s deep knowledge and hands-on teaching style made the entire experience both educational and inspiring.
The result? My very first handmade knife—a 7.5-inch Japanese Gyuto. Crafted from 1084 high-carbon steel, the blade delivers a perfect balance of sharpness, durability, and style. I chose Australian Gidgee hardwood for the handle, enhanced with brass and G10 inserts for added strength and visual appeal. This combination not only feels great in hand but showcases the beauty of Australian materials.
This workshop has laid a solid foundation for the next chapter of Mats Sharpening Services. I’m excited to continue exploring the art of knife making and eventually offer custom handmade knives alongside our professional scissor and clipper sharpening services.
Whether you’re a professional groomer, chef, or simply a fan of finely tuned tools, stay tuned. There’s much more to come as we blend the worlds of sharpening and craftsmanship—right here at www.australiawidescissorandclippersales.com.au.
